I know it’s only summer now, but back to school sales start much earlier than fall. So if you want to spice up your kids’ school supplies and are looking for some really out of the ordinary bags with a French vintage feel to them, I have the perfect items for you here. And even better: there are also great totes, satchels and other items for adults, not just for kids! I bet the bigger ones would make great diaper bags, too!

Miniséri is a very young company, whose first collection was only presented in January 2007. They produce a range of children’s accessories, mainly bags of all kinds and sizes, from book bags to lunch bags, handbags, shoulder bags… They are all beautifully crafted, most are in leather, and many also have French prints on the top flap.

Available at Mes habits chéris. Big bookbag (grand cartable) €90.00, small bookbag (petit cartable) €65.00, mini bookbag/purse (mini cartable) €80.00 (leather) €49.00 (fabric)

Kukunest Asian style lantern bedding

Today we take a little excursion to China, as Asian inspired interior for the nursery will be discussed in the following posts. Hence, I am starting out with Kukunest’s lantern bedding. Available in various sizes – from toddler to queen size – this beautiful print of Asian girls at a lantern festival is simply adorable. And to add to its beauty, this bedding is also Öko-Tex certified, so you can be sure your little ones won’t have harmful chemicals rubbing on their sensitive skin! To match these beautiful 200 thread count 100% cotton sheets, I suggest you decorate your child’s room with Kukunest’s Lucky Dragon poster, a reproduction from a collage, size 18”x24”.

By the way, wouldn’t the Asian lampion wall decals from Anna Wand that I reviewed earlier look magnificent with these two pieces?

Available at Kukunest, e.g. twin bedding $119.00, poster $28.00.

More of Playsam’s modern classics: from rocking toys to jetliners

It’s been a while now since I’ve introduced Playsam’s Streamliner and Xtreamliner cars on SunnyKidstyle, so now it’s definitely time to come back to this fabulous Swedish company and tell you, which other great products they have in store, because all of them share a magnificent, modern and simple design.

Just take a look at their Airliner and Jetliner series, just as beautifully designed as the Streamliner, only that this time, the outcome is not a little toy car, but an airplane. For those kids who like it even faster, they have a Formula 1 and an oldtimer racer in their collection, while budding little sailors will surely enjoy the beautiful sailboats.

And the good news don’t finish there quite yet, because Playsam has just the perfectly designed item for each family member: Your littlest ones will surely enjoy the Swedes’ interesting twist to rocking toys with this rocking rabbit, or this beautiful Saab ride-on, while teenagers or adults might be more tempted by these gorgeous JoJos,pens and key chains.

Design buffs on the other hand will surely fall for their incredible Playtown and Saab 001 concept car: Not that all of Playsam’s items aren’t masterpieces of design already, but especially these last two products are modern art in perfection and would make the perfect sculpture to display in your living room! The polished wooden pieces of the Playtown represent the four most characteristic sights of Sweden’s capital Copenhagen, i.e. The City Hall, Kaknaes Tower, The Globe and The Royal Castle. The superb quality of this set shows in the details: The City Hall’s crown is made of silver and palted with 23 carat gold! On the other hand the Saab 001 model is inspired by Sixten Saxon’s prototype of the Saab Concept Car 92001, which did not look like a normal car, but was futuristic and aerodynamic design in perfection. The modern design of this wooden toy, or rather piece of art, brings the charm of the origninal Saab home with its wonderful sophisticated design. Check them out yourself:

While researching Playsam’s products, I found even more interesting things: In 2006 Fitzsu Society, a Los Angeles based store for modern design home accessories, had gathered a group of designers from around the world to create their own interpretation of Playsam’s cars. While the most beautiful products are of course sold by now, I could still find a few beautiful ones available:

Among others, the whole collection of Playsam products can be bought at US shop UnicaHome except for for the playtown, or at UK shop Juuka . The Fitzsu designer GP cars can be bought at Fitzsu .

Alexander Girard’s wooden dolls for Vitra

OK, today’s picks ended up being much more design oriented than I had originally planned, but the Alexander Girar list were still something in the back of my head, and seeing them at Unica Home just reminded me that I haven’t posted them yet. Besides, it is already a while ago that I have featured some of Girard’s items, so why not have another turn.

These wooden dolls made of pinewood were originally created by Girard as decorations for his Santa Fe home. Fortunately though, design museum Vitra is reissuing models 1-11 of his wooden dolls. These dolls with sometimes happy, sometimes melancholy faces are hand-painted and not suitable for very young children. But with their modern design, they would surely look fabulous as room decoration, not just for the nursery! They also make perfect gifts, since they arrive in a printed, wooden box.

Available at Unica Home for $150.00 each.

Animal Alphabet Poster by Petit Collage

I decided to focus on animal alphabets today, there is such a nice variety available. Just take a look at this fabulous silk-screened poster from Petit Collage. The animal illustrations in their green, brown and orange shades and differing patterns have such a sweet retro vibe, they remind me of old children’s books from the 70s. This print is equally suited for boys and girls and is the perfect room decoration to make learning ABCs fun. What I also like about this artwork is that there is actually a key at the bottom which says which animals the letters stand for, in case you don’t recognize one of them. A little background information: The designer behind Petit Collage is Buenos Aires born Lorena Siminovich, a graphic designer who started Petit Collage in October 2006 with the aim of creating modern, affordable art for children. The Animal Alphabet is printed on uncoated paper, 18×24”.

But Petit Collage also has a few other items, such as these miniture screenprints on curly maple microveneer or paper collages on maple plywood:

Animal Alphabet print vailable on the Petit Collage website for $50.00, miniature prints $28.00 unframed, $48.00 framed, wooden collages $140.00. Click on the image to view a large photo and get the possibility to add the item to your cart.

Animal Alphabet Poster by Decoylab

The next alphabet print by Decoylab is a sleek and modern version for the nursery and available in two different color combinations, a soft pastel pink and blue illustration on the one hand and more spicy orange and green one on the other. Both are equally beautiful though, and with the two different shades, you can find just the perfect color to match your nursery decor. 3 color silkscreen print, 18×24”.

Decoylab also has many other beautiful posters, notecards and also plates, check out these for example:

Both alphabet posters can be bought at Decoylab for $40.00.

Nostalgic alphabet poster by Binth

My last alphabet pick comes from design studio Binth. It’s alphabet poster is inspired by mid-century Danish animal toys and will look great in any modern nursery with its simple design and muted colors. What makes this artwork so great is that even though the vintage toy designs are very much suited for little children, it is not childish and in fact so classy and modern at the same time, that it will be a beautiful decoration for many years to come. The beautiful letters are also available individually, so you can also spell out your child’s name, e.g. The poster is screen-printed, 24×40” and can be bought either framed or unframed:

Binth also has several other great children’s items in classical modern style worth taking a look, e.g a precious babybook, a colorful number print and a gorgeous memory game:

Check out their website for more great designs, they have gorgeous prints for adults as well!
Available at Binth , unframed $85.00, framed $375.00, babybook $110.00, number print unframed $55.00, framed $225.00, memory game $44.00.

Inke wallpaper tree and animals

Today, I will be talking about nature inspired design, a little bit of a sharp contrast after yesterday’s feature on Dutch canal houses. However, I am not totally changing course, since today’s first pick also comes from the Netherlands.

Who would have thought that not decorating a whole wall with wallpaper, but only using wallpaper silhouettes in the shape of animals or trees would be so much more appealing? The idea had never occured to me, until I was totally smitten with this ingenious idea when I first saw it a few months ago. Not only is this a great idea for those of us, who want to beef up the interior without being overwhelmed by too many textures and patterns, but it also gives a bit of retro charm, while still being cool and not too kitschy. Last but not least, Dutch designer Inke Heiland’s creations are simply beautiful, and you can choose among a huge variety of prints in all sorts of colors. Among her collection are gorgeous wildlife animals, such ans elephants, monkeys and ostriches, but also wall-high trees. Though let me warn you, all wallpapers used are original vintage items. While that makes them even more beautiful, stocks are limited and color ranges change constantly. So if you see a design you really like, don’t hesitate too long with ordering. Even if you don’t care for animals, there are also wallpaper chairs, lamps and plants available, for a more ‘grown-up’ appeal!

Besides the wallpaper designs, Inke also offers a birdhouse lamp, a really awesome idea, and it looks simply stunning in combination with the tree wallpaper. And of course it perfectly complements today’s nature theme!

And wouldn’t these trees look amazing together with the Cocoon Couture enchanted forest tree I reviewed earlier? Colors and style are so much alike, just add a few little Inke birdies to surround the tree and your enchanted forest nursery is all set! And while I’m at it, the Ige owl mobile that I reviewed here would look nice with either item as well. By the way, I have just updated my retailer information for the Cocoon Couture items, as i have finally found a US online store that stocks the whole range 🙂

Inke’s creations can be ordered on her website, but you can also buy them in several stores around the globe, if you prefer to see how the prints turn out for real, just check the retailer information on her site, also if you are searching for an online retailer closer to you. Trees € 195.00 each, lamp € 149.95, animals: 2 little birds € 16.40, all big animals between € 39.60 and € 58.50. Prices are for a complete kit including instructions, wallpaper paste and brush, so you can get started immediately.

Nature inspired decor by Roost, not just for the nursery
June 20, 2008, 9:52 pm

Actually Roost is not a company for children’s items, but their whole range of nature inspred lamps, vases, stools and what not is just too gorgeous to be left out. Besides, they do have a couple of really nice items that would fit perfectly into a nature inspired nursery, or one with classy chic, because even though the designs are nature inspired, they are anything but rough and country style. Quite on the contrary, Roost’s whole collection has a very unique and elegant look to it. Take a look at these lamps and you will immediately know what I’m talking about:

Made of matte porcelain, the owl lamp emits a warm, soft light. The birdcage lamp made of the center stalks of palm fronds has a white light diffusor inside with a bird stenciled on it and a cage door. As usual with fragile items that are not designed for tiny hands, you will have to keep them out of your child’s reach until they are old enough to handle them. But of course that is really not a problem for these items, as the owl lamp would look amazing on a shelf and the birdcage lamp being a pendant will be out of reach, but still visible to be admired, anyway.

Each bird from the flock of swallows mobile is handcarved from basswood and hung on a debarked, natural branch. The barnyard animals actually are an item for children, for those older than five years at least. They are made from wood, filt and natural fibres and come in a set of goat, sheep, pig and donkey.

Available at Velocity Art and Design, porcelain owl lamp $121.00, birdcage lamps $230.00-270.00, flock of swallows mobile $140.00, brushy barnyard animals $36.00.

Lief! modern Dutch design with a traditional twist

Lief! (Dutch for sweet) is a relatively new Dutch brand that is becoming increasingly popular. Considering their clean modern designs, which are inspired by traditional symbols such as clogs or windmills, this is really not surprising. The combination is simply great, as all Lief! designs are simply beautiful. They offer a wide variety of products, for example clothes, nursery decor and toys. All items are made in a wonderful style, unique to Lief! Here is a small selection:

Fortunately, even if you are nowhere near the Netherlands to visit one of their stores, they also have a webshop , which also accepts credit cards, something quite unusual I have come to notice, as most Dutch shops I have surfed so far only accept payment via the Dutch iDeal platform. Unfortunately though, I cannot find an Engish version of the site. But as there is not much text to read, I assume you will do just fine, and otherwise you can always access Lief! via the google translator. E.g. quilt € 99.95, coat hanger € 17.95, night light € 5.95. Currently, they also have several nice items on sale, up to 70% off!
